  • Filter Assemblies

We stock a broad range of diesel fuel filter assemblies, agglomerators (water traps), and sedimenter units (traps fuel sediment). A fuel filter is a vital component in an internal combustion engine. Fuel in a fuel tank can contain a number of unwanted contaminants. This can include dirt that has found its way into the fuel tank during filling or rust that has accumulated in a steel fuel tank because of moisture. If these contaminants were to remain in the unfiltered diesel fuel, abrasion caused by these particles in the precision-engineered parts of a diesel engine, could cause significant wear and possible failure of a fuel pump and injectors. More efficient burning occurs if contaminants are removed from fuel too, improving engine performance.

Some filter assemblies on diesel engines have a bowl like design. The bowl could be either a sedimenter which allows contaminant particles to settle at the bottom of the bowl which can be removed, or an agglomerator which allows water to collect at the bottom which can be drained off.

The filter assemblies we stock at Darwen Diesels predominantly pre-date the common rail diesel engine, but we do offer a limited number that are appropriate for common rail engines. The filter assemblies are for agricultural, marine and plant diesel engines as well as cars and commercial vehicles.

We have in excess of 120 filter assemblies in stock. These include:

Toyota, Nissan, and Ford Transit filter assemblies with Bosch, ½” UNF (Imperial), 14mm, 12mm (Metric) assembly with primer, (short/long glass) agglomerator. They are also available from us without primers and single/double with long or short glass or aluminium base. As we stock the majority of necessary parts, we can make uppractically any filter assembly to your specifications.

We also have filter assemblies with sedimenter units: ½” UNF (Imperial)12mm, 14mm (Metric) with single or double base, and with water trap, both ½” and 14mm (with flow Left to Right, Right to Left). They are also available with electric pumps, Marine Sedimenters, and Marine UNF single, both with/without a glass base, (and both long and short), and 14mm special marine and repairable filter assemblies.

The majority of our filter assemblies are in stock. They are available for next day despatch, so please call us on 01254 53545 or fill in our contact form, and we will be delighted to help.

  • Fuel Filters

Fuel filters are an essential part of the safe and effective running of your engine, removing particulates, dirt and water from fuel which could otherwise cause problems in some engine components. Fuel filters act to protect your engine.

There are different types of fuel filtration. Some older vehicles had pre-filters that had a gauze filter that trapped debris and particulates, some cars can be fitted with magnetic filters which fit into the fuel line. The magnet attracts ferrous material and removes it from the fuel. A number of more modern vehicles house the filter in the fuel tank.

The fuel filter performs the following roles:

    1. It prevents engine wear that abrasive contaminants could cause
    2. Stops the blocking of fuel injector nozzles
    3. By removing water in fuel (more frequently diesel fuel) it prevents engine corrosion
    4. By reducing contaminants, it improves engine performance
    5. It can prevent wax crystallisation that can occur in diesel engines at low temperatures.

The stock we have of filters at Darwen Diesels is extensive and includes magnetic filters, non- return valves with incorporated filters and gauze pre filters. We often stock filters that might otherwise be hard to find, or you may require a filter that is very difficult to source, so call us first on 01254 53545 to discuss our current stock availability. We also offer free technical advice over the phone too.

The filters we have in stock are available for next day dispatch.

  • Filter Tops or Filter Heads

There are three principle elements that make up a filter assembly.

There is the filter head, also known as the filter top, the filter itself, and then the filter bowl.

The purpose of the filter head is to determine where fuel is going into the filter and equally where it is coming out of the filter. It could be coming in left and leaving to the right or vice versa. Equally, it could be a five-point filter where fuel in coming in at one angle but leaving at another.

In reality there are a number of different variations of configuration of inlets and outlets and it depends entirely on the vehicle manufacturer.

On some filter tops, there is a primer. The purpose of a primer is to prime the diesel from the tank to the filter and then from the fuel system to the engine. It provides a safety mechanism for scenarios where fuel from the tank needs to be brought to the engine with a minimal amount of wear or damage.

There are numerous variations of filter top available from our stock at Darwen Diesels. We have single and double filter heads (they filter the fuel twice) in both metric and imperial sizes. We can also offer a range of vertical and horizontal mounting for the filter head.

Our list of stock is too much to mention, but we have filter heads in stock for Ford Mondeo’s, The VW Golf (old and new), the Fiat Punto as well as several Toyota and Nissan models. We have filter heads for light commercial vehicles too. We stock Bosch and Purflux filter tops too.

The filter heads available to be sold separately or fitted to make the precise assembly you need. Please call us on 01254 53545 to check stock availability.

Contaminants, bad fuel and dirt are the enemy of any diesel or petrol engine. The reality is that on the journey from the refinery to your engine, your engine oil and fuel have travelled through numerous pipes, and tanks and been subject to airborne dirt and dust that can enter through vents and breathers. On this journey abrasive contaminants will have entered into the fuel and oil which is then put into a vehicle engine.

In addition, normal operational wear in an engine is the source of contamination with tiny metal particles being created by the movement of crankshafts, bearings and pistons, for example.

This emphasizes the requirement and importance of oil and fuel filtration for vehicles whether they be cars, light commercial, marine, agricultural or plant. We have a broad range of filtration parts for a variety of applications for common-rail and non-common rail diesel engines.

Our extensive range of filter components and assemblies includes water traps and water separators, single and double filter assemblies, agglomerators, aluminium and glass filter bases, filter tops, filter elements and in-line filters.

Manufacturers that we stock parts for include: Citroen, Caterpillar, Bedford, BMW, Audi, Ford, Iveco, JCB, John Deere, Komatsu, New Holland, Massey Ferguson, Lister/Petter, Leyland, LDC, Land Rover, Volvo, Perkins, Renault and Peugeot.

We stock both metric and imperial sizes. We have common every-day parts as well as the more unusual difficult-to-get parts that you might struggle to find.
